What God’s Word Says About Anger?

If someone would ask me about three worst weaknesses of my life, anger will not miss to be in that list. I struggle from it, yield to it and reap painful consequences because of it. I have seen it destroying personal peace, peaceful family atmosphere and prosperous interpersonal relationships.

As enslaving and cruel this weakness is, I find God’s word as a great weapon in overcoming this enemy. And this weapon of God’s word can only be used victoriously, not by mere reading and gathering information, but by prayerful meditation and enabling power of the Holy Spirit.

If you are like me, struggling with anger and impatience, I invite you to prayerfully ponder over the following Scriptures [English Standard Version]:
  1. An angry person stirs up conflicts and troubles in interpersonal relationships. It is written, “A man of wrath stirs up strife” (Pro. 29:22a).

  2. An angry person commits many sins against God and people. It is written, “One given to anger causes much transgression” (Pro. 29:22b).

  3. An angry person doesn’t calm a quarrel but intensifies it. It is written, “A hot- tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention” (Pro. 15:18).

  4. An angry person lives in frustration which leads only to evil. It is written, “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil” (Ps. 37:8).

  5. An angry person is a bad model of friendship and influence. It is written, “Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare” (Pro. 22:24-25).

  6. An angry person is cruel and thus unbearable. It is written, “Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming” (Pro. 27:4a).

  7. An angry person is no less than a murderer. It is written, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment” (Matt. 5:21-22).

  8. An angry person is a foolish man controlled by his wavering emotions. It is written, “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back” (Pro. 29:11). Also, “Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools” (Ecc. 7:9).

  9. An angry person does not fulfill God’s will but rather becomes an obstacle to it. It is written, “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (Jas. 1:19-20).

  10. An angry person’s prayer and worship is unholy in God’s sight. It is written, “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling” (1 Tim. 2:8).

  11. An angry person gives foothold to the devil to accomplish his purpose. It is written, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil” (Eph. 4:26-27).

  12. An angry person grieves the Holy Spirit of God. It is written, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (Eph. 4:30-31).
Therefore, the Holy Bible exhorts, “But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips” (Col. 3:8). “Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Col. 3:12-14).
